We are open!

I apologize for the lack of updates on here. We have been very focused on getting the camp ready to pass our State inspections so we could open. We have now passed the inspections and will have 60 people at the camp later today.

This was always somewhat of a gamble. We had to believe our plan for getting the facility into the condition to pass the inspections would work, for we had to go ahead and book the summer dates ahead of time. If we hadn't passed - it would have been a mess!

All of us here owe much to all of the folks who came to help us. We could not have done it without you.

Although we have the camp open, we still have much work to do. We only have about 1/4 of the burnt trees down that we will need to cut, and we still have some areas where we will need to clean up brush.

We are still accepting volunteers

We have been aquiring equipment to deal with the logs. We now have a tree shear that will help us fell the trees, two tractors (one with a grapple) to drag the trees to the chipper, and a compact excavator to load the large trees into the chipper. More photos to come.

We are now looking for volunteers that can help us run some of this machinery.

After some time away, a month-long battle with the flu and months of waiting on the insurance company we have some answers for our future.

We will be open this summer, however we will not have any of the burnt structures replaced by that time. We have received word from our insurance provider that we only have $25,000 for burnt tree removal. We have decided to use that amount to purchase some equipment to help us deal with the trees.

We now have the go-ahead to begin cutting the trees down ourselves. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED! If you have chainsaw skill and can give us a hand, please contact the camp.

We are also in the process of determining exactly how we will rebuild. It is our desire to turn tragedy into celebration as we build a better Buckhorn Camp. At this time, of course, we will be focused on opening in May. However, in the months to come we should be ready to reveal some of the new ideas we have for the future. Your comments are welcome. Please contact the camp with any suggestions you may have.

Things are looking up for the future of Buckhorn Camp!
